County Mayor’s Notes – November 9th, 2020

Free Flu Shots
Don’t forget you can get your free flu shot Tuesday – Thursday from 10 AM until 4 PM at the Senior Center located 1460 South Main Street.

COVID-19 Update (difference from previous day)
I mentioned a few times last week that the number of results being reported seemed to be very low and could be driving the positivity rate up.  The results over the weekend and today seem to indicate that may have been an accurate assumption as we had 698 negative results and 78 new cases over the weekend.  That positivity rate of ten percent, while still a bit high, is much better that the almost 18 percent we hit when the results were slow to get in last week.  Today, we received another 431 negative tests and 49 positive tests.  With the large number of results the seven-day positivity rate still declined.

Evidently there was a large backlog of results due to a software upgrade over a week ago.  I do not know how far the backlog goes or if all of the data has now been caught up.  One of the several issues with receiving data in large batches like this is that is skews short term positivity rates and per capita data.

Even considering the backlog of data that we seem to be receiving, we know we are still having many more positive cases reported.  Please remember to wear a mask when appropriate, social distance, wash your hands, and follow the guidelines provided by Governor Lee and the CDC.  Be smart and avoid places you feel are unsafe.

The following are the numbers from the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) for Cumberland County as of 2:00 PM today. The change from the prior day, not my prior newsletter, is in parenthesis.

291 active cases (+42)
1,626 inactive/recovered (+7)
29 deaths officially reported (+0)
1,946 positive cases (+49)
82 cumulative hospitalizations (+1)
29,754 negative tests (+431)
12.58% positivity rate – 7-day average
83.56% Inactive/Recovered
6.14% cumulative positivity rate (positive cases / positive cases + negative tests)
3.22% of residents have tested positive
0.48% of residents have active cases

These numbers are intended to be a brief summary of the information provided by the Tennessee Department of Health. More detailed information can be found at the online dashboard: https://www.tn.gov/health/cedep/ncov.html

A new dashboard has been released for each county.  You can now view the Cumberland County COVID-19 dashboard here:

https://covid19.tn.gov/data/dashboards/?County=Cumberland

The dashboard seems to be the last data that is updated so it can lag for several hours behind the 2:00 PM daily data release.

School level COVID-19 data is now available online.  Click this link to see the information available for Cumberland County:

Health Department Testing and Face Coverings
Masks/face coverings can help to slow the spread by slowing or stopping the droplets that carry the virus.  Free cloth masks are available upon request at the Health Department for those that want one. Stop by Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm to pick one up for each individual in your household.

The local Health Department (1503 South Main Street) is conducting drive through testing, free of charge, Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.   No doctor’s order is required, and no appointment is necessary. Anyone can be tested regardless of symptoms.

Thank you for being part of the solution and thank you for the opportunity to serve as your County Mayor.  If you are interested in hearing my thoughts and views on news, events, and activities in Cumberland County, please subscribe to my newsletter, and follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Thank you,
